Castello Bizantino, Simeri Crichi - Regione Calabria

Simeri Crichi, in the province of Catanzaro, stretches in a panoramic position at the foot of the Sila National Park, all the way to the Ionian coast. The town of Simeri Crichi is famous for being the birthplace of the monk Bartolomeo da Simeri, founder of the Abbey of Patire (or Pathirion) in Rossano (CS), one of the jewels of Byzantine-Norman architecture in Calabria.

Simeri Crichi boasts an unspoilt coastline, Simeri Mare, which for 3 km offers bathers a stretch of beach that alternates between free spaces and equipped lidos and major tourist resorts.

On the strength of its ancient history, Simeri Crichi offers visitors the ruins of the Byzantine Castle, built around the 10th century in a dominant position overlooking the coast and the Gulf of Squillace. Today, the building still preserves the outer walls almost intact, an imposing cylindrical tower on the north side, a second tower to the south and a large part of the citadel with the Palacium Castri, the seat of power.

In the historical centre of Simeri Crichi, it is possible to visit the Church of Santa Maria dell'Itria, founded between 1121 and 1198 under the Falluc seigniory: it is a monumental ecclesiastical complex (Collegiata), which until its destruction in 1744, due to an earthquake, consisted of three naves and three altars. Also of interest are the ruins of the Capuchin Convent, dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels, which originally had 13 cells and a monumental church.
