Francavilla Angitola

Seen from above, the village resembles a benevolent dragon, an animal associated with the iconography of the patron saint: Saint Foca Martyr, who is celebrated on 5 March and the second Sunday in August. A man whose name is linked to the very origin of Francavilla Angitola, born from the victorious campaign of the Byzantine general Nicephorus Phocas, known as “The Elder”, commander in the two-year period 885-886, when the Saracens plundered the villages of the Calabrian coast, killing the population. In his honour, the ancient place name of Casale di Rocca Niceforo, now Rocca Angitola, of which only ruins remain, and the Church of San Foca Martire, which is worth a visit along with those of the Madonna delle Grazie and SS. Rosario.

In addition to being part of Byzantine history, Francavilla Angitola is also a fundamental stop for those interested in the Augustinian monasteries in Calabria: Santa Maria della Croce is considered one of the most important convents belonging to the Zumpani congregation throughout the 17th century. It housed works of art of great value, paintings and statuary. Today, only ruins remain, which can be admired during a nature trek around Lake Angitola and its surroundings.

Among the typical local customs, that of the “pacchiàna”, the Calabrian peasant woman in festive dress, is one of the most important symbols of craftsmanship and female identity in Francavilla Angitola.
