Serra San Bruno
Serra San Bruno, a spiritual heart hidden from the world
Mountain
Serra San Bruno - Regione Calabria
In the heart of the Serre Regional Park, in the province of Vibo Valentia, the town of Serra San Bruno is nestled within a historic center with Baroque charm, beautifully crafted by local artisans, blending nature and spirituality.
Known as the small capital of the Serre Vibonesi and of fine craftsmanship, its history dates back to the year 1000 and is closely linked to Saint Bruno of Cologne, who founded here the famous Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno (or the Charterhouse of Saints Stephen and Bruno). Visitors can view it from the outside and explore the Charterhouse Museum’s interesting exhibits attached to the building.
The first hermitage is identified by the oldest structures near the Shrine of Santa Maria del Bosco, specifically in the so-called Dormitory, close to the artificial lake where the monk performed penance.
Serra San Bruno’s historic center, along Corso Umberto, is rich with churches and artworks, including the Mother Church, the Church of the Addolorata, one of the most important Baroque monuments in Calabria, and two churches dedicated to the Assumption in their respective neighborhoods.
Trekking enthusiasts can enjoy an excursion in the Serre Regional Park, in the Archiforo Wood, one of the rare forests worldwide where visitors can experience “Shinrin-yoku” or “forest bathing”, and along the “Frassati Trail”.
The walk is ideal for mushroom hunters, who can gather the prized Porcino mushrooms of the Serre, a delicacy enjoyed in local dishes.
