Corigliano-Rossano
Two historic centres in one: history, art and food excellence
Calabria Ionica
Corigliano Calabro - Regione Calabria
The municipality of Corigliano-Rossano was born in 2018, from the merger of the municipal territories of Corigliano Calabro and Rossano, two neighbouring centres of the Upper Ionian Sea in the province of Cosenza.
Immersed in an area of inestimable scenic and agri-food richness, ranging from the Costa degli Achei to the Sibari Plain, these two large towns boast some of the region's most important artistic, historical and gastronomic gems. A few examples?
The historic centre of Corigliano Calabro, on Serratore Hill, offers the marvellous Ducal Castle, one of the best-preserved castles in Calabria, built in 1073 at the behest of Robert Guiscard, and the Mother Church of Santa Maria Maggiore; moving on to Rossano, we find two masterpieces of Byzantine art the Abbey of Santa Maria del Patire (or Pathirion), founded in 1095 by Bartholomew of Simeri, and the ancient Gospel Book known as Codex Purpureus Rossanensis (UNESCO Heritage), exhibited at the Diocesan Museum of the same name.
A stroll along the sea reveals the beautiful beach of Schiavonea (the seaside hamlet of Corigliano Calabro) and its seafront promenade.
Lovers of local specialities cannot fail to visit the "Amarelli" Liquorice Factory and Museum in Rossano (capital of the prized Liquorice of Calabria PDO), and the farms of the Sibaritide area devoted to the production of the very sweet Clementine di Calabria PDO (Corigliano Calabro).
