Chiesa dell'Immacolata, Badolato - Comune di Badolato
Visit the seventeenth-century Church of the Immaculate Conception in Badolato (CZ), in a panoramic position in Badolato Borgo, one of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, the site of Badolato's Holy Saturday rites. The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Badolato was erected in 1686 and restored in 1859 by master stonemasons from Serra San Bruno. On the outside, the dome and the lantern above the church are an admirable example of Badolato's 17th-century art; while the majolica panel on the outer west wall is attributable to a Squillace ceramic factory (19th century). Inside, the white marble high altar with polychrome decorations, dates back to1909 and is surmounted by a canvas of the Neapolitan School depicting the Virgin in Glory. The side altars are decorated with equally prestigious paintings (including the so-called ‘’Angelic Cross‘’ by Thomas Aquinas). The Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception is the protagonist of some of the most important processions of the year: the Procession of the Sorrowful Mysteries on Holy Saturday, the Procession of the Assumption (15 August) and the Procession of the Immaculate Conception (8 December).
