Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria

Place of worship
Comune di Badolato
The Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria in Badolato Borgo has Basilian origins, as can be deduced from the south-facing apse and the position of the high altar on the opposite wall. The first records date back to 1310, while the first restoration dates back to 1646. Inside, one can admire the 19th-century wooden coffered ceiling, of the Serrese school; the altarpiece depicting the Mystical Marriage of St. Catherine of Alexandria with the Infant Jesus, whose attribution is still debated among scholars; fragments of a fresco depicting St. Catherine of Alexandria Virgin and Martyr, restored in 2006 and datable to the mid-15th century. The custody and care of the church are entrusted to the centuries-old Confraternity of Saint Catherine, which participates in the most important religious processions in the town and organises the feast dedicated to the saint every year on 25 November.
