You may suddenly see him, catch a glimpse of his profile on the horizon. Sharp, with a well-defined wisp of smoke or only hinted at, almost to be imagined. In any case, seeing Stromboli from the Calabrian coast is always a great emotion, a spectacle that nature gives to those who know how to observe.
From the Tyrrhenian coast, the volcano and also the other Aeolian Islands are visible very often, but on certain days, with a particularly clear sky, one can remain open-mouthed in front of the beauty of this vision.
See the Stromboli from Calabria
If you are looking for an opportunity to see the Stromboli on the horizon, choose your destination. In Calabria you will have the chance to witness this marvellous natural spectacle very often, from ever new and alluring angles.
The Stromboli, with its unmistakable profile, can be admired from Calabria at various points, especially along the Tyrrhenian coast. Let's see which are the best points from which to observe the volcano.
Tropea and Capo Vaticano
If you are in a boat in the middle of the sea, when you look closely at the horizon you will catch a clear view of the volcano's profile, so defined that it seems closer than it is.
On clear days, the view of Stromboli from the Costa degli Dei is a constant presence. Want some advice? Go to the historic centre of Tropea, from one of the many overlooks Stromboli will appear on the horizon in all its majestic beauty. In particular, the Rico Ripa overlook, hidden between two buildings in Largo Migliarese, is recommended to enjoy this marvellous view.
A walk in the centre of Capo Vaticano will also provide you with a wonderful perspective, with particularly suggestive sunsets framing the profile of the Aeolian Islands.
Pizzo
The Aragonese Castle in Pizzo, better known as Murat Castle because the King of Naples was executed inside it, is a favourite spot for viewing the beautiful volcano profile. From its terraces you can admire not only the island of Stromboli but also the Gulf of Sant'Eufemia.
Nicotera
Then there is a unique spectacle in the world, which happens very rarely, it is the Ulysses Sunset (so called because the Homeric hero was also fascinated by it) or the ‘’kiss of the sun‘’, in practice you can observe the sun setting in the mouth of the volcano.
This is an optical effect visible in only two periods of the year from the Costa degli Dei, in the province of Vibo Valentia. A special observatory is the so-called ‘’Affacciu‘’, in the village of Nicotera. From here you can admire the Gulf of Gioia Tauro, the Costa Viola and part of Sicily on the left and the Aeolian Islands on the right, with the island of Stromboli in the foreground.
