Curinga
Village of Excellence, between the Roman Baths of Acconia and the Millennial Plane Tree
Town
Elisabetta Cirianni
The territory of Curinga has been known since antiquity for its thermal springs and health-giving water, as demonstrated by the presence of the important archaeological site of the Roman Baths, in the municipal district of Acconia.
The Acconia thermal baths, part of a large monumental villa from the Diocletian era (3rd-4th century B.C.), represent a unicum in Calabria due to the state of conservation of the elevated parts, which still allows us to appreciate the almost complete size of the walls.
In addition to the baths, there are the remains of the Mediaeval Aqueduct used to convey water to the trappeti where sugar cane was once processed.
The historical centre of Curinga, listed among the ‘Villages of Excellence of the Region of Calabria’, is characterised by narrow alleys (carrìari), small stone houses attached to each other and small squares overlooked by noble palazzi. The Cathedral (or Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo), the Shrine of Maria Santissima del Carmelo and the Church of the Immacolata are worth a visit.
Curinga is famous for another important attraction: the Millennial Plane Tree.
Also known as Platano di Vrisi or Platano Orientale, it won second place in the European Tree Of The Year competition in 2021. Nearby, in a beautiful landscape, you can also visit the Hermitage of St Elias the Elder (11th century).
