Campo Calabro
A journey through history, forts and nature
Town
Forte Siacci, Campo Calabro - Regione Calabria
Campo Calabro, in the province of Reggio Calabria, is suspended between the sea of the Strait of Messina and the Tyrrhenian foothills of the Aspromonte National Park.
An ancient mountain hamlet of the municipality of Villa San Giovanni, Campo Calabro's strategic position has made it an effective lookout post since ancient times. Proof of this are the three forts that can still be visited today, an integral part of the so-called system of ‘’forts‘’ on the Strait on which the defence of the territories of Reggio Calabria and Messina depended: Fort Batteria Siacci, Fort Poggio Pignatelli and Fort Matiniti Inferiore.
These ‘’coastal batteries‘’, built at the end of the 19th century and frequented only by military personnel, today represent one of the most interesting trekking, birdwatching and nature observation proposals for hikers and visitors to Campo Calabro, as well as hosting important events (such as the ‘’Biennale dello Stretto‘’).
Places to visit in the town centre include the Church of Santa Maria della Maddalena, the House-Museum of Lieutenant Galimi, dedicated to the local hero of World War I who died in battle on the Carso, and the ‘Ranieri’ Municipal Library.
