Norman-Swabian Castle
Castle
Castello Normanno-Svevo, Vibo Valentia - Regione Calabria
The Norman-Swabian Castle of Vibo Valentia stands on the hill overlooking the historic centre and the oldest district of the city of Vibo Valentia. The Castle of Vibo is an important testimony to the history of the Vibo Valentia area since the year 1000. The original building dates back to the time of Frederick II, who re-founded the town of Monteleone (ancient name of Vibo Valentia) with a defensive system of fortified towers (1240-55). The ‘’wedge‘’ tower certainly dates back to this period. Under King Charles of Anjou, the Norman-Swabian Castle of Vibo Valentia was further strengthened and enlarged: the walls, a new entrance and several internal rooms were built, as well as the Church of San Michele. In modern times, Monteleone became a fief of the Caracciolo, Brancaccio and finally Pignatelli families, who made the Castle of Vibo Valentia their personal residence. In the 19th century, the Bourbons were the first to use the Castle of Vibo as a prison and barracks. Since 1995, the Vibo Castle has been home to the ‘’Vito Capialbi‘’ National Archaeological Museum and hosts exhibitions and cultural events.
