On 30 April 2025, the Politeama Theatre in Catanzaro will host a show that interweaves past and present, academy and territory: ‘’I am the music‘’, an unpublished opera inspired by Claudio Monteverdi's Orpheus, born out of the collaboration between the Politeama Foundation and the P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Catanzaro.
The result of an intense workshop with students from the Conservatory's various departments, the performance is an original rewriting of the 17th-century opera, enriched by popular influences and a new musical sensibility. The direction and musical elaboration bear the signature of Mario Tronco, founder of the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, with texts reworked by Maria Laura Martorana, Raffaele Schiavo and Simone Colavecchi, from an idea developed by Nico Staiti of the University of Bologna.
The work pays homage to the original soundscape of the first melodrama in history, where local musicians - among soldiers, storytellers and shepherds - contributed with popular instruments and archaic vocals. It is in this spirit that the new production takes shape, featuring instruments such as ciaramelle, friscaletti, chitarra battenti and tambourines.
