Montepaone - Regione Calabria

The resort of Montepaone, in the province of Catanzaro, is one of the most popular seaside destinations on the Costa degli Aranci, on the Middle Ionian Sea. The hamlet of Montepaone Lido, is a popular location for families with children, due to the summer services and venues offered by its coastline, a short distance from Soverato.

The small historic centre of Montepaone, in a panoramic position on high ground, can be recognised by the two tall bell towers that stand on either side of the Mother Church, the highest point of the village.

Of ancient origins, the town of Montepaone is linked to the legend that Hannibal crossed paths here in battle with Consul Marcellus and killed him. A fact that seems confirmed by the discovery, in 1951, of a large clay amphora containing a human skull. At the site of the discovery, in Montepaone Lido, a monument stands in memory of the battle that took place.

Another historical event remembered by the population is the Saracen raid in 1594, when Montepaone fell victim to the pirates of Sinan Pascià Cicala, who stole the bell of the Mother Church, only to sink a few metres from the shore. The same church preserves a 17th century painting attributed to Ippolito Borghese, sacred furnishings and silver monstrances. Piazza Immacolata is the town's main meeting place.
