San Lucido - Regione Calabria

Among the seaside resorts on the Tyrrhenian coast, in the province of Cosenza, San Lucido offers an experience of sea, archaeology and popular traditions not to be missed.

The town of San Lucido is a breathtaking panoramic view of the Tyrrhenian Sea: the seafront promenade is a splendid 3 km long, while the historical centre is introduced by the remains of the ancient Ruffo Castle.

The ruins of the castle preserve the tower and the stone bridge followed by the drawbridge. The famous Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo (1744-1827) was born here. A beautiful panoramic flight of steps connects the marina to the historic centre, where a walk through the alleyways and overlooks reveals the charm of the ancient palaces between Piazza Giardinetti and Corso Umberto I (Palazzo Manes, Zagarise, Cavallo, Giuliani, Camera and the Town Hall). Also in the centre, the Monument to Cilla evokes the character of the same name from Greek mythology. Not to be missed is a tour of the churches of San Lucido, starting with the Church of San Giovanni Battista, next to the castle; passing by the Church of Santissima Annunziata and that of San Leonardo.

Among the typical features of the San Lucido area, the extraction of white tuff from the mountain quarries is one of the traditional processes, as is the production of prickly pears and the delicious local capers. The best time to visit San Lucido? July, when the historical re-enactment of the battle against the Saracen pirates of Dragut Pasha (16th century), known as the ‘’Vulàta‘’, takes place.
