Sant’Agata d’Esaro
The village where history and flavours meet in the wilderness

Town
Grotta della Monaca, Sant'Agata d'Esaro - Regione Calabria
Nature, history, gastronomy. Three words to sum up the good reasons to visit Sant'Agata d'Esaro: a charming village in the Esaro Valley that stands on a cliff and is nestled in the mountains of the Pollino National Park.
The historic centre is a little gem, with its ancient noble palaces and sacred buildings embellished with altars, statues and furnishings, evidence of a solid and composed faith that still distinguishes this community. Moving away from the historical centre, a visit to the Monaca Cave, located in the upper valley of the Esaro river at an altitude of around 600 metres, is a must. This cave dates back some three and a half million years and an underground burial ground and a site from which iron and copper were extracted have been found inside.
Another symbol of Sant'Agata d'Esaro is the so-called Tavola dei Briganti, a limestone monolith in the shape of an inverted pyramid, about two metres high. Here one breathes an air of ancient history and nature seems to have preserved its traces almost intact. Also worth a stop are the Esaro gorges and waterfalls with the Elephant Rock, the Devil's Finger and the Tesauro Cave, further evidence of the history of this area.
Impossible then, to leave Sant'Agata d'Esaro without first experiencing the unique flavours of its cuisine. For theory there is the Historic Museum of Flavours and Taste, but it is by tasting the typical dishes that one can discover the authenticity of ancient recipes, starting with handmade pasta and meat preparations.
