Nestled in the Serre Regional Park, in Serra San Bruno (VV), the Regional Shrine of Santa Maria del Bosco is a place of ancient Bruno devotion, since it was founded by Saint Bruno of Cologne in the year 1000 as a hermitage and primitive site of the Carthusian monastery of Saints Stephen and Bruno. The Shrine of Santa Maria nel Bosco in Serra San Bruno consists of the actual church-sanctuary at the top of a large granite staircase carved by the last stonemasons of Serra San Bruno; the ancient hermitage on the opposite side, known as the ‘’Dormitory of San Bruno‘’, inside which the bones of the saint were found and today there is an 18th-century marble statue depicting him; and the ‘’Pond of San Bruno‘’, the small basin in which the saint is said to have immersed himself in penance. Picnic areas and forest trekking trails develop around the Shrine.
