From 15 to 19 March, Melissa's historic centre will once again host the Palio da Ruga, one of the most eagerly awaited events in the St. Joseph celebrations. This event combines religious devotion, popular traditions and moments of shared celebration.
The event involves the entire community and evokes the area's ancient customs through the participation of the rughe (the historic districts of the town), who take part in a symbolic challenge that brings the festival to life. The programme features religious events, folk music, shows and activities for young people.
The grand historical parade through the streets of the town is particularly eagerly awaited. On 18 March, it will wind its way through the town's streets, featuring historical groups, costumed figures, musicians, and confraternities. The parade will evoke the atmosphere and symbols of local tradition. The evening will culminate in the presentation of the Palio to the winning ruga and the lighting of the votive fire.
The celebrations will conclude on 19 March, St Joseph's Day, with the return of the statue to its church. This will be marked by fireworks over the sea and a concert in the square.
