The Dummy and the Miss

Among the many traditions that enrich the cultural heritage of San Mango d'Aquino is 'The Dummy and the Miss', an ancestral ritual that celebrates the feast of Our Lady of July.

At nightfall, the village streets are transformed into an explosion of colours and sounds, while papier-mâché puppets come to life under the fascinated gaze of those present. These puppets, symbols of an ancient folk wisdom, are covered in barrels and animated by skilled bearers who weave dance steps to the rhythm of the Raspa, an ancient melody handed down from generation to generation. The climax of the show is marked by the bursting of the puppets' heads, an event charged with symbolism and tradition. The festive and cheerful atmosphere is further enriched by a selection of traditional music, taking the spectators on a journey through the most authentic sounds of Calabria.

Food and wine stands will offer participants the opportunity to delight their palates with the genuine flavours of local cuisine, including the renowned penne alla sammanghese.
