Guided Tour

On Saturday 14 March 2026, at 10:30 a.m., the town of Mileto (VV) will host an archaeology trek dedicated to discovering the history and landscape of one of the most significant places in medieval Calabria. The initiative is part of the National Landscape Day programme and offers a guided walk through archaeology, nature and historical memory.

The route retraces the history of Ancient Mileto, the former capital of the Norman Grand County founded by Roger I of Altavilla, destroyed by the earthquake of 1783 and subsequently rebuilt on the site of the current city. Less than two kilometres from the town centre is the Medieval Archaeological Park of Ancient Mileto, an area that preserves traces of Byzantine, Arab and Norman settlements.

The guided excursion, approximately 2 kilometres long on a flat and easily accessible route, will allow participants to visit the symbolic places of the city's history. The walk will start from the Villa Comunale del Gran Conte, in the centre of Mileto, near the monument to Roger I and the area of the Roman villa of Cultura del Vescovo, and then continue towards the Archaeological Park. Along the way, participants will reach the evocative ruins of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity and the medieval cathedral, while architects, archaeologists and historians will accompany them with stories and insights that reconstruct over two thousand years of urban and cultural history.

Archaeological trekking thus becomes not only a guided tour, but also an opportunity to experience the area with a new perspective: participants will be invited to observe the landscape, recognising the stratification of history and the value of the public landscape as a shared heritage.
