May of Books in Tiriolo 2023

On Sunday 14 May 2023 at 18:00, a meeting with the writer Carmine Abate will take place at the Casa della Cultura in Tiriolo.

The prevailing themes in Carmine Abate's works of fiction are the memory of the cultural traditions of origin, especially of the small Arbëreshë communities, and the encounter with the people living where emigration from the South is strongest. The stories by the author, who emigrated to Germany for work as a young man, are the result of his direct experience in Germany and northern Italy. In a number of Carmine Abate's works, especially in the collection of short stories entitled Il Muro dei Muri (The Wall of Walls), emphasis is placed on what is society's real enemy, racism, the greatest barrier that exists in the world and which seeks to divide mankind, a reason for incomprehension and incommunicability between them.

Abate is the author, with Cataldo Perri, of the play Vivere per addizione nelle terre d'andata (Living by Addition in the Outlands of the Outlands).

On 1 September 2012, he won the 50th Campiello Prize with the novel La collina del vento.
