Church of Madonna della Catena

The Church of the Madonna della Catena is the oldest in Cittanova. Historians believe that the site there was previously a Byzantine church dedicated to St. Mary of the Field. The original structure was built by the inhabitants of San Giorgio Morgeto, under the name of Santa Maria of Campoforano, and dedicated to the Assumption. Following the cholera epidemic that hit the Plains to the mid nineteenth century, the old church was rebuilt, expanded and dedicated to Our Lady of the Chain. Inside, among the works of relief, a wooden statue of the Assumption.
