An aubergine parmigiana is the first dish that Giuliana, a young and bubbly woman, prepares after marrying Pietro, a semi-unknown man. This is where ‘’I Married You for Joy‘’, the first of eleven comedies written by Natalia Ginzburg, one of the greatest authors of the Italian 20th century, comes to life.
Written in 1965, this irresistibly comic and richly rhythmic play brings to the stage vivid and recognisable characters, such as the cursed poet Manolo, the spinster friend Elena, the predatory Topazia and the bigoted aunt Filippa. With a light but profound plot, the play explores family and social dynamics with irony and acumen.
