Calabrian Sounds Festival
Calabrian Sounds Festival in Roccella Ionica from 14 to 16 September 2023.
Music
Regione Calabria
The Festival of Calabrian Sounds takes its inspiration from the motorway signs of the Mediterranean: "On the footsteps of Bacchus and Ceres". The idea is to consider the festival as Ariadne's thread, a "thread" of Calabrian musicality, which, starting from Pollino, crosses Mount Poro, the Serre, the Ionian coast to the slopes of Aspromonte. The Festival, in its first edition, aims to take root in the so-called tradition and then develop into any musicality (rock, pop, blues, jazz, opera, electronic, various and any) that originates from hands and voices made in Calabria.
The 2020-2023 edition features three evenings:
- Thursday 14 September Cusato-Tropepe duo (Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts), a union of the individual experiences of two extraordinary musicians, who speak of blues, folk tradition, African rhythms, giving rise to a combination of sounds that touch the soul, travelling through time and space in search of lands "so far so near, from Mississipi to Aspromonte, passing through Mali".
- On Friday 15 September, Gaudio-Pace duo (Southern passion, on the borders between Calabria and Lucania), a concert in which the diatonic accordion is the main protagonist. Under the artistic direction of maestro Riccardo Tesi, the duo will elaborate original music recreated in the context of the Lucanian Calabrian and Campania folk tradition, without neglecting Argentine tango and articulated odd rhythms, giving vent to the broadest popular images and colours.
- Saturday 16 September Peppa Marriti band (Santa Sofia D'Epiro - CS), the first group to combine American-style rock with the Arberesh musical and cultural tradition, from which they take traditional folk songs, called Vjersh, and Balkan sounds accentuated by the use of the violin, with the aim, through music and memories of their origins, of giving dignity to those people who live on the margins of society, isolated instead of being helped. Giving voice to the last, to the marginalised, to all those who suffer a fall and struggle to get back up.
