Shrine of Saint Francis of Paola
Place of worship
Santuario San Francesco da Paola, Paterno Calabro - Regione Calabria
The Shrine of Saint Francis of Paola in Paterno Calabro, in the province of Cosenza, is an integral part of the Saint Francis Path, one of the region's official Paths dedicated to places of faith.
Saint Francis of Paola lived and worked in Paterno Calabro for forty years. The shrine, founded by the saint in 1444, bears witness to his presence.
The interior of the building, in Baroque style, is a veritable museum: two paintings by Santanna are associated with several frescoes depicting episodes from the life of St Francis of Paola.
In the side aisle is the Chapel of St Francis, where some relics are kept.
From the church one has access to a cloister with six pointed arches, in the centre of which is the basin that must once have been a working well. The Cave and the Oratory are also worth visiting.
