Savuto Castle

Castle
Castello di Savuto, Cleto - Regione Calabria
Also known as the “Guardian of the Savuto River”, the ancient Savuto Castle in Cleto, in the province of Cosenza, is a strategic sentinel guarding the Savuto Valley, Calabria's second most important river after the Crati. Among the medieval castles in Calabria worth visiting, hosting important events throughout the year, the Angevin Castle of Savuto (or Castle of Sabuci) is located in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Cleto and has its own story to tell: built in the 13th century as a control outpost, the Castle of Savuto was at the centre of the bitter dispute over the territory between the Angevins and the Aragonese.
From a structural point of view, the Castle of Savuto preserves the various construction phases even after restoration work: for example, the typical Piazza d'Armi, in the form of a fortified enclosure within the walls, and the mighty circular tower (Torre Mastio), both dating back to the Aragonese period, are still accessible. A gem? Among the ruins, an inscription dedicated to Eliodora Sabbasia, wife of the Royal Treasurer stationed at the Castle of Savuto, dating back to the 16th century, is still visible today.
