San Rocco Square

Scilla's historic centre is built around Piazza San Rocco, where the church of San Rocco, Scilla's patron saint, and the town hall are located. The Piazza San Rocco consists of a vast terrace built on a rocky ridge, and overlooks the panorama of the Strait of Messina. The view embraces Punta Pacì (which marks the southern end of the Scilla area), Sicily (in particular Ganzirri and, on a clear day, Capo Milazzo), in the distance some of the Aeolian Islands (Lipari, Panarea and Stromboli), and the Ruffo Castle.
The historical centre comprises the old village of Bastìa, characterised by the low houses facing the characteristic alleys. Some architectural elements of the original local style remain visible in the buildings that exist today, including the characteristic low arch and the typical round window.
