Olive Tree Rock

Point of interest
Palmi - Regione Calabria
There is something truly extraordinary in the Tonnara Bay of Palmi, on the Calabrian Costa Viola. A centuries-old tree, growing on a small island immersed in the sea, just a few metres from the beach. It is the Olive Tree Rock, a symbolic place on this stretch of coastline characterised by unspoilt nature and crystal-clear sea.
Over the centuries, the branches and roots of the wild olive tree have become inextricably intertwined, transforming the tree into a sculpture created by nature and shaped by time, wind and salt. Because of its uniqueness, the Olive Tree Rock has been recognised as a National Monument. In the Tonnara Bay, the view is truly impressive. Set in a surprisingly clear and turquoise sea, there are a series of small rocks and on another of them a more recent olive tree has grown.
The Tonnara beach, so called because of the old tuna fishery active in the last century, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Calabria. It is almost two kilometres long, ‘’embraced‘’ by the imposing Mount Sant'Elia, and is scenic and welcoming, with small stones and very white sand. Because of its rich seabed, this bay is perfect for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts, but in summer it is a coveted destination because it is truly an oasis of peace immersed in nature. Not far away, there is also a small harbour where you can buy fresh fish directly from the boats or even organise an excursion to get a closer look at the reefs, caves and less accessible beaches.
