Cosenza's Swabian Castle, located on top of the Pancrazio Hill, one of the city's seven hills, is one of Cosenza's architectural symbols. Built on an artificial motte of rectangular shape, whose presence dates back to the time of the indigenous population of the Brettii (6th century BC. ), Cosenza's castle underwent various transformations over the centuries: it is often referred to as Norman, since it was Roger II the Norman who enlarged it in the 12th century; in 1184, the first of a long series of earthquakes destroyed its original structure and it was not until Frederick II of Swabia (13th century) that Cosenza's Norman-Swabian Castle once again took on an important defensive function.
With Frederick's modifications, the structure took on the name of Swabian Castle of Cosenza, with a rectangular layout and angular towers, crenellated patrol walkways and vaulted rooms. The latter, in recent times, have often been the venue for artistic and cultural events and festivals. At present, the structure is not accessible, but it is worth visiting from the outside to admire the grandeur of the walls and the splendid panorama of the city.
