Norman-Swabian Castle

Castle
Castello Normanno-Svevo, Arena - Francesco Agostino
Those who set off on the “Norman Trail”, dedicated to the historical figure of Ruggero d'Altavilla in Calabria, will certainly pass by the Castle of Arena (VV), one of the most important sites in Norman history in the region, located in the Serre Regional Park. In the historical document known as the Apprezzo di Arena (1653), we read:
The aforementioned castle offers a beautiful view and perspective from afar and up close, and is the most beautiful, strong and secure in the entire province due to its prominent location; it can withstand any enemy attack and can be maintained for a long time.
The Castle of Arena was built around the 11th century, then mostly rebuilt by the Conclubet family (between the 14th and 15th centuries) and later modified by the Acquaviva dukes (between the 16th and 18th centuries). The Castle of Arena was destroyed by an earthquake in 1783 and today only part of the corner towers and perimeter walls remain visible, as well as the monumental entrance and the subdivision of some internal rooms. In the immediate vicinity are also the remains of the medieval aqueduct that supplied water to the castle (12th century).
