Natural reserve
Regione Calabria
The Macchia della Giumenta-S.Salvatore Nature Reserve covers an area of 323 hectares in the municipality of Bocchigliero, in the Sila National Park in the province of Cosenza. It is characterised by very rich vegetation: forests of black pine, alder, aspen and beech. The Macchia della Giumenta-S.Salvatore Nature Reserve is also of considerable importance for the animal species it shelters: common hare, squirrel, wild cat and the ever-present Sila Wolf. Its sub-flat territory is crossed by modest streams, all of which flow into the Trionto River.
Near the Macchia della Giumenta-S.Salvatore Nature Reserve, you can visit the Incavallicata geosite, home to the mysterious Campana Giants (or Stone Giants): elephant-shaped monoliths in the municipality of the same name. The Bocchigliero-Campana trekking route is one of the unmissable stages of the Basilian Path.
The “Macchia della Giumenta” Biogenetic Nature Reserve is not far from the Santa Croce Valley, which is home to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in this area: the Piciaro Waterfall.
