Ferruzzano Vecchio - Saccuti

Ferruzzano Vecchio

Point of interest

Ferruzzano Vecchio - Regione Calabria

Built around the second half of the 15th century, the historic centre of Ferruzzano (also known as Ferruzzano Superiore) owes its hilltop location to the constant raids by Saracen pirates. These events gave rise to the three different hamlets that make up the municipal territory, including the now abandoned village of Saccuti (or Ferruzzano Vecchio), a significant testimony to the most ancient past. Walking through the deserted streets of Saccuti is like being on an open-air film set, and in fact several films for cinema and television have been shot here.

Among the alleys and ruins of abandoned houses, it feels like moving in suspended time, with the impression that the old inhabitants could return at any moment: the interiors of the houses, gutted by numerous earthquakes, display furniture and small objects of domestic life, just as their owners left them when they fled; the nursery school, the unmistakable yellow of the old telephone sign, everything in Saccuti contributes to creating an atmosphere of suspension that the most romantic travellers cannot fail to appreciate.
