"Coturelle - Piccione" Nature Reserve

Natural reserve

The Coturelle-Piccione Natural Biogenetic Reserve is located in the green heart of the Sila National Park, in the municipality of Magisano in the province of Catanzaro. The “Coturelle-Piccione” Nature Reserve offers nature lovers two nature trails, both starting from the “Buturo-Casa Giulia” Visitor Centre: the first is of medium difficulty (about 6 km with an elevation gain of about 200 m); the second, more difficult (about 10 km with an elevation gain of over 400 m), leads to three unmissable waterfalls: Lupo, Faggio and Lampone.
Within the “Coturelle-Piccione” Nature Reserve, part of the municipality of Albi, lies the ancient abandoned village of Buturo, once inhabited by Silane workers and their families: foresters and labourers engaged in the care and maintenance of the area. The various historic buildings that made up the village now form the “Buturo-Casa Giulia” Visitor Centre, which is open to the public and freely accessible all year round. The surrounding paths, equipped with explanatory signs, tell the story of the Silano village and the flora that now forms a veritable green labyrinth, including local fruits, aromatic herbs and a wildlife enclosure for deer.
