Church of the Madonna ad Nives

The Church of the Madonna ad Nives (Church of Our Lady of the Snow) is located in Verbicaro (CS) in the characteristic Bonifanti district and is the oldest public building of medieval origin in the town. An architectural jewel that rises on top of a rock, dominating the panorama with its austere beauty. Inside the Church of the Madonna ad Nives in Verbicaro, one can admire three distinct decorative phases of Byzantine-style frescoes, evidence of the artistic and spiritual evolution of the local community over the centuries.

The oldest of these decorations dates back to the end of the 11th century: the remains of a fresco depicting a bishop saint. The style of this work reflects the typical characteristics of Byzantine art, with solemn lines and an aura of sacredness that evoke the influence of eastern culture in the Calabrian area at that time. The Church of the Madonna della Neve is not only a place of worship, but also a living testimony of the past, preserving tangible traces of Verbicaro's spirituality, art and history.
