Capo Rocchi Tower
Point of interest
Torre di Capo Rocchi, Bagnara Calabra - Regione Calabria
The promenade along the seafront of Bagnara Calabra, on the beautiful Costa Viola in the province of Reggio Calabria, overlooks the Strait of Messina from a unique vantage point: the famous Capo Rocchi Tower. One of the oldest remains to survive the disastrous earthquake of 1908, the Aragonese Tower of Capo Rocchi dates back to the 15th century and is part of the sophisticated system of Calabrian coastal towers set up by King Charles V to defend the territory from the numerous Saracen attacks of the time.
Today, the completely restored Tower of Capo Rocchi has a circular plan with a truncated conical base. Traces of some corbels supporting the crenellated crown are visible. One of its peculiarities is undoubtedly its strategic position, which historically made it a cultural and social landmark for the entire coast. An interesting fact? The Capo Rocchi Tower communicated directly with the noble and religious centres of the town, in particular with the local Abbey.
