Are you thinking of planning your holidays in Trebisacce, in the province of Cosenza? The perfect choice for lovers of the sea and historic villages rich in art and good food!

The sea of Trebisacce, with its Blue Flag beach, stretches along the Costa degli Achei: Trebisacce's seafront is the best place from which to admire the sunrise; while its historic centre, among ‘’The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy‘’, is defined as the ‘’Balcony of the Upper Ionian Sea‘’.

Let's find out now what to see and do on holiday in Trebisacce!

The village of Trebisacce

The historical centre of Trebisacce, today listed among ‘’The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy‘’, rises on the scenic plateau that was once surrounded by the 16th-century city walls, erected to defend the town from raids by Saracen pirates. The remains of the walls, also known as the Bastion, still include the Annunziata Gate, the only surviving gate among those that gave access to the medieval village.

Among the places not to be missed when walking around Trebisacce is the Church of San Nicola di Mira (1040), an eastern saint much venerated in Calabria. The building represents a precious testimony of Greek-Byzantine monasticism in the region and is distinguished by its characteristic ‘’trullo‘’ dome. Another place you absolutely must visit while on holiday in Trebisacce is the Ludovico Noia Museum of Olive Oil Art and Peasant Culture: a place of identity, closely recounting the history and ancient traditions of the hills. Housed in an old oil mill, the museum consists of three rooms and displays working tools and original documents related to the local oil-making tradition.

Trebisacce's agro-food and culinary culture exalts the local oil to the fullest, to be tasted on a slice of homemade bread in the oil mills that allow the visit. The other local excellence, among the most important crops of the area, is the so-called Biondo Tardivo: a particular quality of Portuguese orange with the P.A.T. (Traditional Agri-food Product) mark.

Trebisacce, sea and beaches

When we reach the Marina of Trebisacce, we decide to take a walk along the Trebisacce seafront, which offers the beauty of its Blue Flag beach, repeatedly awarded for the cleanliness of its sandy shore and water and for the services suitable for all bathing needs. The sea of Trebisacce is characterised by a beautiful stretch of free beach in the northern part of the coastline, ideal for those who wish to go beach hiking, alternating with equipped lidos and fish restaurants a little further south, where the small Trebisacce Pier is located.

For archaeology lovers, we recommend a visit to the nearby Broglio Archaeological Park: the ancient protohistoric settlement with an adjoining necropolis, where several Mycenaean ceramics have emerged.
