Sport and nature

Are you planning your holidays in Soverato? The "Pearl of the Ionian Sea", in the province of Catanzaro, is waiting for you to experience its clean sea, Blue Flag and Green Flag, and its traditional nightlife.

One of the most popular seaside destinations in Calabria, the Soverato beach is a paradise for those who experience the sea from dawn to dusk, breaking away only to admire the beauty in the surroundings and enjoy the typical dishes.

You don't need to go to the Maldives to immerse yourself in an uncontaminated environment, with wide beaches of fine sand, just reach the sea at Soverato and discover why it is called the "Bay of the Hippocampus".

What is so special about Soverato's beach and sea? Apart from being a guarantee of excellent services, perfect for families booking their holidays in Soverato, they are also an uncontaminated place, awarded the prestigious Blue Flag and Green Flag (beaches suitable for children) every year.

Would you like to spend your holidays in Soverato in the company of your four-legged friend? You can do so with complete peace of mind, since the Soverato beach is one of the "pet friendly" beaches in Calabria and enjoys a very special "lifeguard" service: in the free stretches, rescue is ensured by the excellent Labrador dogs of the local SICS K-9 dog units.

Those in search of services and comforts for a carefree holiday can rely on the professionalism and years of experience of the Soverato lidos, which have always been attentive to the needs of bathers: from beach service to sports, leisure and recreational activities.

During the day, relaxation, sunbathing and sports and wellness practices (such as the authentic "salute to the sun" that rises from the bay); in the evening, aperitifs with a sea view that stay up late, until the following dawn, turning into memorable disco nights.

Nature and diving enthusiasts will appreciate this extraordinary stretch of sea, at the centre of the Gulf of Squillace, whose seabed reveals the abundant presence of the "seahorse", the protected species of Hippocampus that gives its name to the entire bay and makes the sea at Soverato one of the Regional Marine Parks.

A true "pearl" of the Calabrian Ionian Riviera, the Soverato coastline is dominated by the monumental Tower of Charles V, one of the many watchtowers built in the Middle Ages to protect the towns from attacks by Saracen pirates.

The tower is immersed in one of the town's must-see places: the "Santicelli" Botanical Garden, from which one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire gulf, surrounded by well-tended Mediterranean scrub.

Soverato's Seafront is a meeting point for the community and tourists in all seasons.

Surrounded by all kinds of venues (lidos, kiosks, gourmet restaurants, discotheques and ice-cream parlours), gardens of palm trees, oleanders, exotic trees and well-equipped parks (for both sport and children's play), the promenade is the "must" promenade that runs along the Soverato's beach for a length of 3 km.

What to see and do in Soverato

Far from being a purely seaside destination, the town of Soverato offers several attractions all year round.

Spending your holidays in Soverato means discovering a place of very ancient origins, even prehistoric, as demonstrated by the small burial cavities dug into the rock known as "Grotticelle", presumably identified as a "Sicilian" necropolis.

In the immediate vicinity, during winter storms, the submerged remains of a vast Roman quarry emerge, the preservation of which is truly unusual to see.

The other interesting archaeological site, this time medieval, is on the hill of the so-called Soverato Vecchia (or Soverato Antica). This is the original 16th-century village, which was destroyed and abandoned in the 1783 earthquake. Among the ruins are still visible the remains of the dwellings (tower-houses, some with chimneys and attached services), the Baronial Palace and the old parish church.

An alternative trek with breathtaking views is the one that runs along the entire Via Panoramica, passing by the aforementioned Botanical Garden and the nearby Adventure Park.

If you love art, particularly that of the so-called ‘southern school’, do not miss the famous Pietà by the sculptor Antonello Gagini, in Carrara marble, kept in the Mother Church of Addolorata, in the centre of Soverato Superiore (located just above the marina).

Finally, you cannot end your holiday in Soverato without tasting the typical fish dishes, especially those enhanced by the king of Soverato cuisine: the Mediterranean Pink Shrimp, whose presence abounds in the Gulf of Squillace.
