Sport and nature

Canyoning enthusiasts are spoilt for choice!

Canyoning in Calabria is one of the most popular sports because of the abundance of rivers and lively watercourses that furrow valleys in the green.

The River Furria, in the Aspromonte National Park, is among those that offer the most naturalistic charms to be experienced in total safety.

Canyoning in the River Furria

Canyoning in Aspromonte? The River Furria valley is the place for you!

We are immersed in the uncontaminated nature surrounding Roghudi, among the so-called "ghost towns" in the province of Reggio Calabria. A pleasant place, which has turned depopulation into a strong point for promoting slow tourism initiatives, cine-tourism and, of course, nature excursions.

Entering the characteristic Mediterranean scrubland of the Aspromonte massif, we reach the gorge of the Torrente Furria to embark on an easy, although not entirely practicable route (until the first three jumps).

Explored for the first time in 1996, the gorges of the River Furria (already visible from the car park on the road) today represent one of the most fascinating canyoning experiences in Aspromonte

Canyoning along the River Furria is advisable in summer, but can be practised from April to November wearing a 3 mm wetsuit. There are three jumps from which one can dive, the last of which has a water level that varies quite a bit depending on the season, so it is best to check this by contacting local guides and hikers.

At the centre of the gorges, you can stop above the vertical and opt for two different descents: the first, truly spectacular, is a large cavity carved out by natural erosion and can be visited inside, up to the exit of the gorge at the confluence of the Mangusa (another canyon in Aspromonte), under a jet of water coming from above.

Aspromonte: canyoning and not only

Canyoning: naturalistic Calabria and beyond!

In addition to the first section of the Torrente Furria, the other viable Aspromonte canyoning routes are as follows:

  • Allaro
  • Altalia
  • Aposcipo
  • Barvi
  • Butramo
  • Campolico
  • Gelsi Bianchi
  • Chalonero
  • Ferraina
  • Galati
  • Glicorace
  • Gole del San Leo
  • Jamundu
  • Maisano
  • Mangusa
  • Marte Gigliola
  • Nessi
  • Piminoro
  • Sant'Agata
  • Santa Trada
  • San Pasquale

Many of these Aspromonte canyoning routes skirt some of The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, making it possible to combine sport with a visit to this splendid area.

We suggest you do not miss the excursion to Roghudi Vecchio (the aforementioned "ghost village"), a place where time has stood still and the ruined houses have remained in the days of abandonment.

Another place to visit is the municipality of Roccaforte del Greco, one of the most important centres of Grecanic language and culture in this area. It is home to the so-called "Greeks of Calabria", one of the region's three ethnolinguistic minorities.

The entire area, known as Bovesìa (from the municipality of Bova), is rich in thematic routes. There is something for all tastes: lovers of trekking in nature can reach the park's main geological and landscape attractions from here; those who wish to visit villages will find the typical welcome of the Aspromonte communities, ready to offer samples of local dishes and products.
