Today's excursion takes us to Laino Borgo (Cosenza), in the heart of the Pollino National Park. Laino Borgo is a town with a fascinating history, but above all with unspoilt nature, perfect for those who love outdoor adventures.

We are in the ‘’Lao River Valley‘’ Natural Reserve, one of the favourite places for rafting in Calabria. Let's find out what to see in Laino Borgo and the activities of ‘’Lao Rafting‘’ in Laino Borgo.

What to see in Laino Borgo

Laino Borgo is a small mountain centre nestled in the heart of the Pollino National Park. The territory is traversed by the Lao and Iannello rivers: the former, part of the Nature Reserve of the same name, generates a canyon about 200 metres deep and is the centre of ‘’Lao Rafting‘’ in Laino Borgo, which makes the town one of the most popular rafting spots in Calabria.

Before indulging in this adrenaline sport, let's take a tour of the old town centre, one of the smallest in Italy, and discover what to see in Laino Borgo, starting from the central square and the numerous churches and chapels dotting the area: in addition to the Mother Church of the Santo Spirito, the most important building of worship in Laino Borgo is the Shrine of the Madonna dello Spasimo, also known as the ‘’Shrine of the Chapels‘’, among the Marian shrines venerated in Calabria. As the name suggests, the characteristic feature of this site are the small chapels scattered around, which are faithful reproductions of the ‘’holy places‘’ in Jerusalem (Bethlehem Grotto, Calvary, St. Joseph's Sepulchre, St. Helena's Tomb, etc.) frescoed and decorated with Gospel quotations.

Strongly linked to the spirituality of the faithful of Laino Borgo are also some of the main folkloristic events, the most popular of which is the so-called ‘’Giudaica‘’, which takes place on Good Friday and is rightfully among the Easter rites in Calabria not to be missed: a long procession with 200 participants, staging 19 re-enactments of the Passion of Christ.

Rafting in Laino Borgo

In the Lao River Valley, rafting in Laino Borgo is one of the main activities to enjoy. It is an unforgettable experience, suitable for everyone: professionals and beginners, groups of friends and families, accompanied by an expert guide. Due to its characteristics, the Lao River, whose name recalls the ancient Greek colony of Laos, is a favourite destination for rafting and canoeing enthusiasts, appreciating the close contact with nature and the mountainous terrain. To raft in Laino Borgo, all you need is suitable equipment and to follow the precise instructions of the experienced local guides. The experience is also suitable for children (from 4 years of age accompanied by adults).

Before flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea, the river passes through the territories of the so-called ‘’Lao villages‘’, namely Laino Borgo, Laino Castello, Papasidero, Orsomarso, Santa Domenica Talao, Santa Maria Del Cedro and Scalea. Each of these is worth a visit, as well as the opportunity for extraordinary excursions: from the Palaeolithic site of the famous Romito Cave to the discovery of works of art, handicrafts and typical flavours along the ‘’Road of ancient crafts‘’.
