Have you ever heard of the liquid gold produced in the province of Catanzaro? It is the delicious Honey from Amaroni, a town that has made bees and their healthy nectar a product of excellence.

Declared the “City of Honey”, Amaroni boasts a high-quality product, which, thanks to local organic beekeeping, is winning over the market as well as the palates of honey lovers.

Let's take a trip through the Ionian hills to discover the secrets of Amaroni Honey.

Amaroni Honey

Among the finest products of Calabrian beekeeping, Amaroni Honey is a true sensory experience, combining the discovery of nature with a tasty and healthy food. We are in the green hills of the Ionian coast of Catanzaro, overlooking the Gulf of Squillace, rich in Mediterranean flowers and herbs (chestnut, eucalyptus, orange blossom, etc.). This is where the fragrant Amaroni Honey is produced, the pride of a town that has become the “City of Honey” and is dedicated to organic and sustainable beekeeping.

Chatting with the producers of “Liquid Gold”, we discover the organoleptic characteristics that distinguish it and some interesting facts... For example, the beekeepers of Amaroni proudly inform us that they are among the best in Europe, respectful of environmental sustainability and traditional methods which, over time, family-run businesses have been able to adapt to the most advanced processes. The goodness of Amaroni Honey is enhanced by the unique climate and biodiversity of the area, perfect for discovering on a trip into nature, among the educational farms in the area.

Whether amber or golden, depending on its composition, Amaroni Honey is a real panacea, rich in beneficial and cosmetic properties: a natural antiseptic and antioxidant, it is effective in treating respiratory, skin and hair conditions. In addition to being a valuable food for its benefits, included in the Mediterranean Diet, Calabrian honey is the absolute star of regional pastry and confectionery production, a basic ingredient in some of the most appreciated specialities in the world: from Nougat from Bagnara PGI to traditional Christmas and Easter dessert recipes.

What to see and do in Amaroni and the surrounding area

Are you wondering what to see and do in Amaroni? After tasting the prized Amaroni Honey, let's take a walk through the historic centre, nestled at the foot of Mount Carbonara, along the fertile valley of the Ghetterello stream. Here, as we stroll through the narrow streets, we can admire the oldest traces of the town, which seems to have originated from the old village called Majurizzùni, not far from the present-day town, on a 6th-century site (as evidenced by the discovery of archaeological material).

Today, apart from the historic buildings symbolised by the Mother Church and the oldest palaces, like many villages in the process of depopulation, Amaroni has also entrusted the revitalisation of its spaces to new forms of “street art”: the most significant and monumental intervention is dedicated to the history of local emigrants and bears the signature of the Neapolitan artist Gennaro Troia, aka Jena Soul.

Amaroni is located a short distance from the medieval village of Squillace, the “City of Ceramics”, which is a must-see for those who want to discover the area's fine craftsmanship and visit the important Norman Castle with its adjoining Antiquarium, which dominates the Costa degli Aranci from above. Descending towards the sea, we cannot help but stop at the white, unspoilt beaches that characterise the coastline, an irresistible attraction in every season of the year.
