For all

It's time to think about your holidays, as every year the problem is finding beaches that meet the needs of people with disabilities?

You have several good reasons to look in Calabria for what is right for you: equipped areas and services that make access to the sea easy and comfortable also for people with sensory, physical, cognitive disabilities or reduced mobility.

More and more facilities on the Calabrian coast have equipped themselves with walkways that allow wheelchairs to pass through the sand, and many also provide a Job chair (a special beach wheelchair with large wheels) to accompany the disabled person to the shoreline. But there is more, let's see what some of the main accessible beaches in Calabria have to offer.

Siderno

Siderno

Siderno - Regione Calabria

In Siderno there is a free beach for everyone. Yes, because right on the seafront a motorised descent system has been installed to lead people who cannot walk into the water, thus making them autonomous, not dependent on an escort.

It is a device made in Greece with a battery powered by a solar panel, which is activated by a simple remote control. The chair, which is positioned on a motorised corridor, reaches into the sea allowing comfortable bathing. Siderno is one of the very few Italian municipalities that have equipped a public beach with this rollable support. In this stretch of public beach, in addition to the motorised descent to make access to the sea easy and the stay on the beach pleasant, there are walkways and umbrellas available to bathers.

Catanzaro Lido

Catanzaro Lido

Catanzaro Lido - Vincenzo Stranieri

If your destination is Catanzaro Lido, at the Valentino Beach Club you will find a beach equipped for people in wheelchairs or with walking problems and operators trained to assist guests with disabilities.

The social cooperative that built this facility, in fact, wanted to create ‘’oases‘’, i.e., paved balconies, to isolate families who need privacy, so that they can enjoy the services of the beach but without touching the sand. This is particularly welcome, for example, by those with children on the autistic spectrum who do not like to get dirty.

The lido has a special automated walkway that reaches down to the sea and allows everyone to bathe independently and safely. However, the Job chair is available and the beach has paths that cross the shoreline, designed for wheelchairs and equipped with handrails.

Isola Capo Rizzuto

Capo Piccolo

Isola Capo Rizzuto - Regione Calabria

The beach at the Baia del Sorriso Village at Capo Piccolo (Isola Capo Rizzuto) is designed precisely to guarantee comfort and autonomy for people with reduced mobility or in wheelchairs. Pathways and walkways make it easy to move around and a lift is available so that bathers can enter the water directly and bathe easily and safely.

Reggio Calabria

Reggio Calabria

Reggio Calabria - Regione Calabria

Just ten kilometres from Reggio Calabria, in the locality of Bocale, there is a beach that in summer becomes a meeting place for days of relaxation and fun for everyone.

The Lido Sciao Beach is equipped to accommodate people with disabilities and motor difficulties, starting with reserved parking spaces. Access to the sea is facilitated by the walkway that reaches the foreshore, and a Job chair is available to enter the water without excessive effort on the part of accompanying persons. One and a half sunbeds are also available for those who need more space.

Pizzo

Pizzo

Pizzo - Vincenzo Stranieri

The setting is the marvellous Costa degli Dei, with its turquoise, crystal-clear sea. Here, in Pizzo, there is a beach designed to meet all the needs of people with disabilities and their families.

It is called Malferà Beach and is run by a young woman who experiences first-hand the difficulties of those with limited mobility. The lido offers free services: parking, bathroom, direct access with a slide to the clean beach, beach umbrellas and picnic tables. Creative workshops in ceramics, painting and decoration are also organised during the summer months.
