Guided tour of the Florense Abbey and San Giovanni in Fiore

In the heart of the ancient village of San Giovanni in Fiore stands the Florense Abbey, a medieval masterpiece founded in 1215 by Abbot Joachim of Fiore. The building, with its large cloister and a church modified over time, preserves a simple nave, an imposing apse and the crypt housing the founder's remains. Today, the Abbey houses the International Centre for Gioachimite Studies and the Demological Museum of Silan Economy, Labour and Social History.

Strolling through the surrounding mediaeval village, among craft workshops and shops selling typical products, you can end the experience with a tasting of pitta ‘mpigliata, a traditional Silan sweet made with dried fruit, honey and spices wrapped in a thin layer of crunchy pastry.
