U Ddirroccu

On 16 August, San Pietro in Guarano hosts the now historic "Ddirrocchi" evening: papier-mâché puppets, created by the creativity of local builders, dance to the rhythm of drums through the crowded streets of the town.

The event opens with the parade of the "hooded men", who wander around carrying torches created from the workings of the barbasso yew tree. The group moves through the village streets in the company of the traditional "pantasima", a figure from local folklore that used to frighten children. During the evening, it will be possible to taste typical products at the gastronomic stands set up along the course. At the stroke of midnight, accompanied by the traditional "waltz du ddirroccu", the most beautiful puppet is burnt at the stake.

Tradition has it that the ddirrocchi should be burnt on the night of Saint Roch so as to invoke the benevolence of the Saint and protect the town, averting misfortunes, catastrophes, famine and pestilence. When the flames of the bonfire are extinguished, a DJ set will be set up to flood the entire village with music.
