Petronius' Satyricon comes to Calabria in the form of a theatrical production that reinterprets the famous novel through a contemporary lens. Director Francesco Polizzi transforms this classic of Latin literature into a show that intertwines different languages, mixing references to popular theatrical tradition with the epic dimension of the original text.
At the heart of the production is Trimalcione's dinner, a symbolic episode from the novel that is reimagined as a theatrical depiction of a society obsessed with ostentation and appearances. The banquet of the newly wealthy freedman serves as a backdrop for an exploration of the decline of customs, the ambiguous relationship between power and parody, and the insatiable pursuit of pleasure that defines a civilization at its peak, on the verge of transformation.
The production alternates between moments of intense drama and passages of sharp irony to maintain a critical view of the represented world.
