On 12 January 2026, Crotone will once again become a symbolic place of learning with the Pythagoras Award, a prestigious international scientific event that pays tribute to excellence in contemporary mathematical and scientific research and thought. Promoted by the Jobel Consortium, in collaboration with the University of Calabria and the Italian Mathematical Union, the ceremony is confirmed as one of the most important cultural events on the national scene.
The protagonist of the 2026 edition will be Gianluigi Greco, Rector of the University of Calabria, who will be awarded the Pitagora Prize in recognition of the value of his academic and scientific career. Alongside him, the presence of prominent scholars, including Berardino Sciunzi, further enriches the cultural profile of the event.
The highlight of the day will be the lectio magistralis by Professor Georg Gottlob, one of the world's most authoritative figures in the fields of theoretical computer science and applied mathematics. A professor at the University of Oxford and TU Wien in Vienna, Gottlob is known for his fundamental contributions to database theory, mathematical logic and symbolic artificial intelligence systems, areas that continue to have a decisive influence on international scientific research.
The award, the Silver Pythagoras, is an exquisite sculpture created by master goldsmiths Michele and Antonio Affidato, inspired by Raphael's The School of Athens. It is a work that evokes the dialogue between disciplines, knowledge and humanism, values that the Pitagora Award aims to preserve and promote.
