From 10 to 12 October 2024, Calabria will become the beating heart of the academic world with the 10th edition of the international conference "Modern Greek Dialects and Linguistics Theory", the most important event dedicated to Neo-Greek dialects. This edition will have a special character: for the first time it will be held in the region's Hellenic-speaking countries where the Greek-Calabrian language is still spoken, and Gallicianò will be the final stop.
Programme:
10 October: In Bova, the proceedings will be opened by Ioanna Manolessou, director of the Research Centre for Modern Greek Dialects and editor-in-chief of the Historical Dictionary of Modern Greek.
11 October: In Roghudi Nuovo, important reports will animate the day, including the speech by Prof. Franco Fanciullo from the University of Pisa, an expert in glottology and dialectology.
12 October: The conference will culminate in Gallicianò, where a special session dedicated to the Greek varieties of Salento and Calabria will be held. The day will be opened by Prof. Norma Schifano of the University of Birmingham, followed by speeches by international experts who will discuss the future and revitalisation of Greek-Calabrian. Gallicianò, a symbol of cultural and linguistic resistance, will take centre stage, celebrating its fundamental role in the preservation of this ancient language.
More than 70 scholars from all over the world, including Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, Poland, Russia, Spain and Greece, will participate in this unique event.
