Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows

The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is celebrated in Roccella Jonica every year on the third Sunday of September and it is traditionally considered the event that concludes the summer period in the town of Roccella.

The cult of Mary Most Holy Our Lady of Sorrows dates back to 1798 in the parish of St Anastasia through the work of the congregation of the same name, which with profound devotion has maintained the tradition to the point of handing it down from generation to generation to the present day. Today, thanks to the commitment of six young people from the town, with the support and approval of the parish priest, the Maria Santissima Addolorata Standing Committee is committed to promoting the religious and popular tradition of Our Lady of Sorrows and other activities aimed at disseminating historical, musical and folkloric knowledge, and it carries out various non-profit initiatives to support the socio-economic and cultural development of the town.

Every year, the committee proposes and organises places for religious and social gatherings as points of reference in the area, to counter phenomena of marginalisation and isolation, and to collaborate with the relevant public and private institutions for promotion and development activities.
