On 1 November 2025, at 9 p.m., the Politeama Theatre in Catanzaro will host one of the most famous love stories of all time: Romeo and Juliet, in Fredy Franzutti's choreographic version for the Balletto del Sud, accompanied by Sergei Prokofiev's immortal music.
Created in 1998, this ballet stands out for its original setting in Aragonese Italy, a context marked by violence and rigidity, which makes the story of the Veronese lovers even more intense. Franzutti was inspired by the story of Masuccio Salernitano, the first to narrate the tragic story that would later inspire Shakespeare.
The sets, designed by Francesco Palma, are brought to life by the paintings of Giotto, Piero della Francesca and Cimabue, transporting the audience into a suspended, illustrative and two-dimensional world. The costumes, faithfully reconstructing the humanist era, reinforce the archaic charm of a production that combines dance, art history and literature.
