Arzata da 'ntinna

The origins of the arboreal rite of the 'ntinna are lost in the mists of time: in the archaic traditions of the peasant culture, the rite represented a propitiatory nuptial coupling with the tree and with nature, symbolising the reawakening of vegetation in spring and the fertility of the earth. Later absorbed by popular Catholicism, the rite was associated with the celebrations of Martone's patron saint, St George, which take place on the second Sunday in August.

Today, the arboreal rite has become a manifestation of collective faith, aimed at strengthening the ties between members of the present community and those of the emigration diaspora, reinforcing the values of traditions and the bonds of belonging to common roots.

The preparatory phase of the ritual already takes place the year before the feast, with the selection and felling of the most beautiful beech tree. Two days before the festival, the felled tree is transported from the mountains to the town centre with the help of mighty oxen, and here on Saturday, after being grafted onto the top of a pine tree, it is decorated with lights, flags and typical products.

The most magical moment is that of the "arzata", when, in front of the entire town community, the majestic plant is hoisted into the centre of the square by skilled marksmen, to the delight of the youngsters, who measure themselves in the attempted climb to the top, which is full of prizes.

The 2023 edition will be even more under the banner of tradition, with the involvement of Calabrian folk music groups who, with bagpipes, pipite and other traditional instruments, will entertain participants with touring shows. The presence of street artists, which has already been a great success in past editions, will be repeated. Finally, a parade of traditional Calabrian costumes will also be held.
