The small town of Zungri, in the province of Vibo Valentia, is nestled in tuff stone, halfway between the Costa degli Dei and the slopes of Mount Poro.

Also known as the "City of Stone" (or "Calabrian Petra"), Zungri is famous for the rock site known as the Zungri Caves (or "Sbariati Caves").

A jewel carved into the rock, a rare example of a cave site typical of the "cave dwelling" lifestyle that developed in many areas of the Mediterranean from Late Antiquity onwards. The settlement of the Zungri Caves is a small village divided into different areas, with rooms used for various purposes by the ancient community of the Sbariàti. Who were these first inhabitants? According to some scholars, they were a community of Eastern origin; according to others, they were guardians of a productive outpost or warehouse of the nearby kastron of Mesiano, a fort attested between the 8th and 12th centuries. The site is also unmissable because of its splendid panoramic terrace.

The historic centre of Zungri offers a unique form of street art linked to the decoration of the old doors of abandoned houses. Don't miss a visit to the Museum of Rural and Peasant Civilisation, which displays a rich collection of objects representative of the traditions and customs of the area between the 19th and 20th centuries.
