The history of Villapiana, the ancient Leutermia, passes through the Saracen raids that razed it to the ground. The Capo Saraceno Tower, at Villapiana Lido, among the coastal watchtowers of the Calabrian defence system under King Charles V, is clearly visible from that period.
Buildings to visit in the historic centre of Villapiana include the Church of Santa Maria del Piano (13th-14th century) in Gothic style with Baroque touches, the Convent of San Francesco (16th century), the Church of the Santissimo Rosario and the Convent of Sant'Antonio.
Other noteworthy historical sites include the 20th-century Palazzo Barletta (or dell'Americano), the Monks' Garden and the remains of the ancient tuffaceous rock Castle.
