Verzino
The land of Rock Caves, founded by Philoctetes

Town
Regione Calabria
The village of Verzino, in the province of Crotone, is nestled in a unique landscape: halfway between the typical Badlands of the Marchesato and the olive groves, vineyards and orchards that alternate with mysterious cavities.
These are the Verzino Caves, an ancient rock site not far from the village, which legend says was founded by the Greek hero Philoctetes.
Although the origins of Verzino are shrouded in myth, its present day still bears traces of a history and archaeological past worthy of further study, starting with the rock settlement. Of Byzantine origin, the Verzino Caves are easy to visit: they are located about 5 km from the town centre and bear witness to the ancient "cave life" of the Basilian monks. The route to discover the caves includes a visit to the Speleology Museum, an ancient wine press with an oil mill and the evocative karst gorges carved out by the Vitravo river. The historic centre of Verzino offers the beauty of the Ducal Palace, now the Town Hall, and the Church of S. Maria Assunta and San Biagio, along the road leading to the old town.
